The story is often traced back to French, Spanish, and Dutch sailors between the 16th and 17th centuries.

However, modern historical research has found little surviving documentary evidence proving that this practice was widespread at the time. Rather than treating it as a confirmed starting point in the history of sex dolls, it is more accurate to view it as one of the most enduring legends surrounding their origins.

From Maritime Companions to the “Dutch Wife”

As maritime trade expanded between Europe and Asia, stories of human-shaped companions also became increasingly associated with Dutch sailors.

This connection is often cited as one reason the term “Dutch Wife” later appeared in discussions about the history of sex dolls.

In Japan, “Dutch Wife” was used for many years to describe certain adult human-shaped products. Japan also had a long-established tradition of dollmaking and human-shaped figures, which helped create a unique cultural environment for the later development of its adult doll industry.

Still, just like the stories surrounding dames de voyage, it would be misleading to claim that modern sex dolls were simply invented by Dutch sailors in the 17th century.

The “Dutch Wife” is better understood as an interesting chapter in the cultural history of sex dolls rather than a firmly documented point of invention.

1950s Germany: Human-Shaped Adult Products Enter the Commercial Market

If we look for a better-documented milestone in the development of modern sex dolls, Germany in the 1950s becomes particularly important.

In 1955, the famous Bild Lilli doll was introduced in Germany.

Lilli originated as a comic character published in the German newspaper Bild. She was portrayed as an independent, fashionable adult woman with a distinctly provocative personality for the time.

German manufacturer Greiner & Hausser later transformed the character into a plastic doll, which remained in production from 1955 until 1964.

Early Bild Lilli dolls were frequently sold in places such as tobacco shops and were often purchased by adult men as novelty gifts. Over time, however, the doll also entered the mainstream toy market.

Strictly speaking, Bild Lilli was not a sex doll in the modern sense.

She was only a few dozen centimeters tall and did not offer any of the functions associated with modern real dolls.

Her historical importance lies elsewhere: she represented one of the early examples of an adult female image being transformed into a commercially produced human-shaped consumer product.

Interestingly, Bild Lilli also became an important inspiration for the development of Barbie. Mattel eventually acquired the rights to Bild Lilli in 1964.

Sex Dolls Enter the U.S. Consumer Market

By the 1960s and 1970s, the adult products industry in the United States was beginning to expand rapidly.
